Mars retrograde occurs when Earth's faster orbit brings us between the Sun and Mars, creating the optical illusion that Mars is moving backward through the zodiac. It happens roughly every 26 months and lasts between 2--3 months.
For 2024-2025, the retrograde window is precise: Mars stations retrograde on December 8, 2024, and stations direct on February 25, 2025 -- a 79-day period. During this time, Mars appears to move backward through Leo, from approximately 29° Leo to 16° Leo.
What's happening astronomically isn't actually a reversal -- it's an optical effect. Astrologers work with apparent motion because that's what we observe from Earth. The Sun, Moon, and visible planets all appear to move through the zodiac from our perspective, and retrograde periods are simply the times when an outer planet's motion relative to Earth shifts direction.
For Mars specifically, retrograde periods are significant because Mars is the fastest-moving inner planet (after Mercury and Venus). When it slows and reverses, the change is noticeable. Astrologically, retrograde periods are associated with internalisation -- the planet's energy turns inward rather than outward.
The pre-retrograde shadow period (when Mars begins to slow) started in October 2024. The post-retrograde shadow extends until April 2025, when Mars finally clears the point where it stationed retrograde. This extended timeline -- roughly six months total -- means the influence isn't confined to those 79 days. The review and recalibration process starts earlier and integrates more slowly.
Leo, the sign Mars is transiting, adds the flavour of personal power, creative expression, and heart-centred assertiveness. Retrograde in Leo isn't about hiding away -- it's about becoming more intentional with how you shine.
